Kratos is the protagonist of the God of War video game franchise, first appearing in the initial God of War game in 2005.
Originally a Spartan warrior, Kratos rises through the ranks to become a respected general. However, haunted by visions and manipulated by the God of War, Ares, Kratos unknowingly murders his own family. This act brands him with their ashes, earning him the title "Ghost of Sparta."
Seeking redemption and revenge, Kratos embarks on a path of violence, challenging the Olympian gods and seeking to overthrow their rule. His journey is marked by brutality and a thirst for vengeance, leading him to confront a multitude of mythological creatures and deities. Later games explore his attempts to escape his past and find peace, particularly within Norse mythology.
